The #BackTheBid campaign is a rallying call to people across Ipswich to sign up, get involved and demonstrate the strength of local backing behind the town’s cultural vision and ambition for the future.

Engagement with young people and widespread public support will be a key part of the final submission, demonstrating that the bid is about the whole town coming together to celebrate everything that makes Ipswich unique and special. Signing up will also give people access to updates and engagement opportunities, as well as the chance to share ideas for both the bid itself and a long-term vision for culture in Ipswich.

DanceEast is leading the development of Ipswich’s ‘Expression of Interest’ for the 2029 City of Culture competition, with a deadline of 8th February 2026.

Anthony Missen, Chief Executive & Creative Director of DanceEast said: “We want this EOI to reflect culture in its widest sense and embrace all the diverse ways people come together to live, play and connect in Ipswich. But to do that, local people – and especially young people – need to be at the heart of shaping our plans. Dee, who had previously been the manager of Supercuts in the Buttermarket, saw the opportunity to start her own business when Supercuts relocated. “It seemed like a natural progression to set up our own salon in the same location,” she recalls.

Over the past three decades, Deesigner Hair has built a reputation not only for excellent service but also for a loyal and dedicated team. Over a dozen employees have been with the salon for more than 10 years, with four serving over 20 years. Two staff members, Lyndsie and Clare (known to many as Kirby), have been part of the salon family for 29 and 24 years respectively.

Reaching the 10-year milestone was significant, but hitting 30 years feels truly special. “We could not have got this far without our fabulous team of staff or our wonderful customers, many of whom have become friends and part of the Deesigner Hair family,” says Dee.

Like many businesses, Deesigner Hair faced challenges over the past five years, particularly during the Covid-19 pandemic, which changed the industry dramatically. Despite these hurdles, the salon has persevered and is looking confidently toward the future. Dee adds, “We are about to sign a new 15-year lease to remain in the Buttermarket, and with the support of our staff, customers, and Rebecca and her team at the Buttermarket, we are looking forward to the next 15 years!”

Why is this important?

A recent WWF & Buglife report revealed that 17 bee species are now regionally extinct in the East of England. The decline of these crucial pollinators threatens ecosystems and food security alike.
